چکیده

In recent papers [4, 5, 8, 11] Petri net controlled grammars have been introduced and investigated. It was shown that various regulated grammars such as random context, matrix, vector, valence grammars, etc., resulted from enriching context-free grammars with additional mechanisms can be unified into the Petri net formalism, i.e., a grammar and its control can be represented by a Petri net. This unification allows approaching the membership (parsing) problem in formal language theory in the new point of view: instead of a usual derivation tree, one can use a Petri net derivation tree in which the control mechanism is also considered as a part of the tree. In this paper, we show that the parsing problem for regulated grammars can be solved by means of Petri net derivation trees constructed using the net unfolding. Moreover, we present a parsing algorithm for the deterministic restriction of Petri net controlled grammars based on the well-known Earley parsing algorithm. Varieties of Heuristics in Sentence Parsing * Makoto

There are many methods of sentence parsing, but parsing always presupposes a grammar, which is usually composed of a set of so-called grammatical rules or rewriting rules. There are many grammars proposed so far, and many parsing algorithms have been developed based on these grammars. Characteristics of these parsing algorithms are a direct reflection of the features of the grammar formalisms u...

Position-and-Length-Dependent Context-Free Grammars - A New Type of Restricted Rewriting

For many decades, the search for language classes that extend the context-free laguages enough to include various languages that arise in practice, while still keeping as many of the useful properties that context-free grammars have – most notably cubic parsing time – has been one of the major areas of research in formal language theory. In this thesis we add a new family of classes to this fie...

Parsing with Pictures

The development of elegant and practical algorithms for parsing context-free languages is one of the major accomplishments of 20 century Computer Science. These algorithms are presented in the literature using string rewriting systems or abstract machines like pushdown automata, but the resulting descriptions are unsatisfactory for several reasons. First, even a basic understanding of parsing a...

Treebank Grammar Techniques for Non-Projective Dependency Parsing

An open problem in dependency parsing is the accurate and efficient treatment of non-projective structures. We propose to attack this problem using chart-parsing algorithms developed for mildly contextsensitive grammar formalisms. In this paper, we provide two key tools for this approach. First, we show how to reduce nonprojective dependency parsing to parsing with Linear Context-Free Rewriting...

A probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars

This paper describes a probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars. Top-down parsers have the great advantage of having a certain predictive power during the parsing, which takes place in a left-to-right reading of the sentence. Such parsers have already been well-implemented and studied in the case of Context-Free Grammars (see for example [Roa01]), which are already top-down, but th...
